The day has come to replace the steering head bearing on a friends bike. I wanted to try a more elegant approach than heat/hammer/chisel as i needed to save the bearing seal if possible.
I started by cutting a slot on both sides of the bearing using an angle grinder.
Filed the head two hex bolts to fit into the slot.
I then attached these bolts to a bearing puller and sandwiched everything in a vise
The moment of truth, I started tightening the bearing puller until i heard the rewarding cracking sound that meant that the bearing has moved.
